Position:
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Kansas, through an exchange agreement with the Facultade de Filoloxia Inglesa at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, announces one position for an English Instructor. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese screens applicants and recommends the selected individual for approval by Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. The position is contingent on staffing needs at the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.*
Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications: GTA in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. For this position, the applicant must demonstrate native-level proficiency in English. Experience teaching courses at the level of SPAN 216 or higher is preferred.
Required qualifications: Graduate student in a degree program at KU with demonstrable qualifications for teaching English as a second language.
Selection criteria in order of importance include:
(1) demonstrated excellence in teaching
(2) evidence of ability to work independently
(3) evidence of professional commitment to scholarship, research, and collegiality
(4) relevance to your academic program (either for research or for strengthening cultural and linguistic competency)
(5) GPA and seniority, if all other factors are equal.
Please indicate your intention about returning to the KU program the following year. [Returning students will have higher priority.]
Responsibilities:
Teach classes approximately 10 to 12 hours each week (these are called “prácticas,” in which students integrate receptive and productive skills); hold office hours; prepare, give, and grade examinations during three examination periods (September, February, and June-July); and participate in the administration of oral exams.

Duties: To fulfill all the teaching responsibilities, especially to (a) teach one section of Spanish 111, 212 or 216 during the summer session as assigned by the department; as a five credit hour course, each section of SPAN 111 is taught by a two-person team (b) collaborate with peers to develop a course syllabus and maintain program integrity; (c) prepare all quizzes and exams, and to administer and grade all tests, quizzes, and homework assignments designed for the course; (d) hold regular office hours for the assistance of students; (e) maintain a clear grade book with a record of all student evaluations; (f) administer a “Student Course Evaluation” at the end of the summer session; (g) comply with all University, school, and/or departmental policies and to perform other related duties as assigned. These positions are on the Lawrence campus.

Degree-seeking graduate student in good standing at the University of Kansas, continuing graduate studies at KU in Fall 2009

La visita de la Profesora Priscilla Meléndez
Gracias al Hall Center y el Departamento de español y portuguese tenemos la oportunidad de escuchar a la Profesora Pricilla Meléndez de la Universidad de Yale. Ella va a dar una charla el 5 de diciembre a la 1.30 en el salón de conferencias en el Hall Center. Presentará su trabajo, "The Body and the Law: Violence and Violation in Sabina Berman's Backyard and Hugo Salcedo's El viaje de los cantores". Are you preparing to make a conference presentation and want to practice your delivery with a friendly audience? Are you considering submitting a paper for a conference and seeking constructive feedback on your work? Do you want to have the professional experience of presenting your work to a scholarly audience without incurring the costs of conference travel?
GRASP and the department's faculty invite you to submit a brief description and title (no more than 100 words) to participate in the Stop Day Colloquium, an informal forum for sharing your work with your colleagues and professors. We hope to make the colloquium a regular event in the future, but first we need to gauge the interest of the department's graduate students in participating in this new initiative. Presentations will be limited to 20 minutes (normally the equivalent of 9-10 pages of double-spaced text), the standard allotment for conference presentations. Whether you're exploring the experience of reading a paper to an academic audience for the first time or looking to polish your skills before your next conference performance, this event is meant to foster this important aspect of professional development. Feel free to contact your GRASP representatives (graspku@gmail.com), Professor Rivera (ijrivera@ku.edu) or Professor Bayliss (rbayliss@ku.edu) for further information. Proposals are due by Wednesday, December 3.

- Profesor Juan Pablo Dabove de la Universidad de Colorado va a visitarnos para hablar sobre lo gótico y la modernidad en las obras de Leopoldo Lugones. Dabove va a dar una charla ("Pesadillas de la ciudad letrada: gótico y modernidad en Las fuerzas extrañas, de Leopoldo Lugones"), el jueves, el 20 de noviembre a las 16.00 en 4008 Wescoe. Se puede acceder a los textos de los que se va a tratar durante la charla en GDrive bajo la carpeta SPAN.
- This coming Wednesday (November 12th), University Relations will swing by Café Castellano to take pictures and chat with the graduate and undergraduate students who attend the event.

Para que conozcan a los nuevos GTAs
Este artículo iba a ser parte de la primera edición de la revista departamental. Dado que GRASP va a mantener este Blog en vez de publicar una revista, ustedes tienen el placer de leer el artículo aquí. Gracias a Ezekiel (Zeke) Stear, un estudiante del primer año de la maestría, por entrevistar a los demás de los nuevos GTAs y por escribir esta introducción.
Unas palabras de los nuevos GTAs
-Ezekiel Stear
El nuevo grupo de colegas en el programa de posgrado representa tres continentes, varios países, y reúne una variedad de experiencias académicas y profesionales.
Anny Fung (Lima,Perú) tiene experiencia profesional en zonas rurales peruanas como maestra y organizadora de campesinos. Le interesa la teoría de Paolo Freire, quien ve las experiencias de estudiantes como fuente del currículo. Tiene tres años en KU haciendo su doctorado en la facultad de Educación; y éste es su primero como G.T.A. de Español. De KU, le gusta el ambiente multicultural y comenta que le entusiasma ser G.T.A. porque “no sólo comparto un idioma, sino una experiencia de cultura”.
Beatriz López (Santiago de Compostela), viene a Kansas para su maestría en la Adquisición de Segundas Lenguas. Cree que KU da una buena combinación para ella entre enseñar e investigar. Los paisajes y alrededores de Lawrence le recuerdan a partes de A Coruña y Austurias.
Tiffany Miller (Ashville, North Carolina), tras viajes y lecturas, llegó a sus enfoques de investigación: la poesía contemporánea, la literatura zapatista, y la poesía feminista. Escogió KU por su tradición poética y sus profesores amables y accesibles. Quiere enseñar en el nivel universitario, publicar y dar ponencias. Vive con su esposo y su gato “más lindo”.
Audriana Wilhm (Kansas) cursa la maestría en Educación para dar clases de español en la preparatoria (H.S.). Es casada con un bebé; y quiere que su familia viva una experiencia bilingüe. Le gusta viajar en México, su segunda patria, o en Panamá, donde su esposo tiene parientes.
Ismael Souto Rumbo (A Coruña, España) hizo su licenciatura en el Español, y luego dio clases en nivel de secundaria en varios sitios de Europa. En Kansas sigue en su gremio, con planes de hacer su doctorado y conseguir un puesto como profesor universitario. Busca aproximaciones creativas para su investigación y enseñanza.
Ezekiel Stear (California) tiene maestría (Educación Bilingüe), unos años como maestro de primaria y de community college, y experiencia en Latinoamérica y España. Quiere estudiar la literatura colonial, hacer el doctorado y encontrar trabajo a nivel universitario. Le gusta Lawrence, viéndolo como lugar ameno para su esposa (Olivia) y su bebé (Lukas).
Kevin Rongish (Witchita, Kansas) estudió en Costa Rica y Puebla, México, y tiene dos licenciaturas (Español, Inglés). Vino a Lawrence por la alta calidad de letras en KU. Señala que el programa, “es un reto para mí”; asimismo cuenta que ser G.T.A. ha sido una experiencia nueva e interesante.
Marco Mora (San José, Costa Rica) hace su doctorado en Educación, (Currículo y Enseñanza). Es profesor de universidad en su país y quiere instaurar lo que aprende en Costa Rica después. Tiene hijo (Andrés, bebé) y esposa (Dafne). Le ha gustado la universidad de KU, por su arquitectura y zonas verdes.
Matías Beverinotti, (Buenos Aires, Argentina), vino a Kansas para su maestría y doctorado, con enfoque en la literatura argentina de 1900-1950. Sus primeras impresiones de Kansas resumen nuestro sentimiento común: “Encontré lo que vine a buscar y más… Más que nada es la gente que me gusta”.
Tales son nuestros comentarios a iniciar este año académico. Todos vemos aquí los recursos necesarios para crecer a nuestras próximas etapas. De veras, nos sentimos bienvenidos.
